The adverb describes the verb. For example in the phrase ‘to run slowly’, the adverb ‘slowly’ answers the question of ‘how to run?’ and in the phrase ‘to draw quickly’, the adverb ‘quickly’ answers the question of ‘how to draw?’
In English adding the suffix “-ly” to an adjective forms an adverb: slow slowly, quick quickly.
The Stages of Forming the Adverb in Spanish
In the first stage of conjugating the adverb, we add the suffix ‘-mente’ to the adjective (just like adding ‘-ly’ in English.) In the second stage, only if the adjective ends in the letter ‘O’ we replace the ‘O’ with an ‘A.’ For example, the adverb we will form is ‘slowly.’ Slow lento. The first stage: add the suffix ‘mente’ to the adjective lentomente. Now, in the second stage, replace the letter ‘O’ with the letter ‘A’ lentamente.
